What is the Great Cycle?
Writings from the time of the conquest were sometimes contradictory regarding the length of an age. The Maya, however, were never vague about time. As we have learned to read their history, surviving mainly on stone walls, carvings and ceramics, there is general agreement on the date of the beginning of the current age. On August 13, 3114 BC, three great stones were laid down that formed the foundation of our present universe. The Stela C creation text in the city of Quirigua, a carved stone tablet, tells us that this day also marked the end of a span 13 Baktuns, a Great Cycle, and the duration of the previous, third age.
Thirteen Baktuns is equivalent to just over 5,125 years, and in our present age of the jaguar, the fourth age, the Great Cycle runs out on the winter solstice, December 21, 2012. This date will come. Its meaning, and the metaphorical meaning of the death of a sun, the rebirth of a universe, and the Mayan Prophecy of the return of the god Quetzalcoatl, is the subject of active debate.
