A greeting sent by Ronaldo Similox on Wajxaq'i Bat'z, September 4, 2008, Mayan New Year's day, first day of the sacred Cholq 'ij Calendar.
'Brother and sisters, it is a pleasure to greet you on this special day for Indigenous Peoples. We celebrate the beginning of a new year of our sacred calendar Cholq `ij. Today our calendar marks the Wajxaq'i Bat'z (Eight Thread). This means the life of humanity is like a thread rolled in the skein of Our Father and Mother, the creating mind and fertile matrix, Ucux Kaj and Ucux Ulew, Heart of Heaven and Heart of Earth.
'The Wajxaq'i Bat'z (Eight Thread) means the destiny of man and continuity with the past. It is the thread of time and the evolving development of humanity and nature. It is the symbol of the creator, the time and life of humanity, the origin of the world, and the beginning and end of all that exists. It can be represented as a cone of thread which unravels as time passes. It is the Nahual (spirit) of all the arts.
'That is why we welcome this beginning with a hope that this year will bring a furthering of the vision of the ancestors: that the universe was and will remain wonderful, intelligent, balanced and orderly through scientific laws. We look for the development of understanding, the realization that everything is interrelated and interdependent and has emerged with respect for creation. It emerged with the sacralization of the universe, which today continues through the offerings of Mayan ceremonies.
'We invite all to cultivate science, values, and knowledge of our ancestors, so with good feet to walk the path of our history we might leave our children a healthy and dignified and existence. It is especially important in this world with its wars, economic shocks, disease, and the vast gap that has opened between rich and poor.
'We sent a hug of solidarity and our best wishes for this Maya New Year that it will bring Blessings of Ajaw, in your homes and work, and that together we may build countries where values and principles of life, peace and justice reign.'
