Part I The Maya thought

The Maya have a very unique way of seeing reality. We live in the world of material and spiritual at the same time. In other words, a reality with two branches. We understand our reality based on religion and rituals. The religious language clarifies the place of human beings in nature. This affects our life, political, social, and economic, as well as the way in which the community operates.

Alongside this we live in a world as a physical manifestation of the spiritual material, and as the spiritual essence of the material world. The experience of life is manifested in two realities in two complementary dimensions.
These two levels of existence are very closely linked. The actions and interactions of beings from the other world influence the destiny of this world. At the same time, spiritual beings from the other world depend on us for their wellbeing.  They need our rituals, deeds, acts and sacrifices, and everyone, from the most humble farmer to the ruler, formerly lived in this dual reality. The Maya have tried to solve the problem of social inequality because this is precisely what keeps us from Ajaw (God).

Formerly, the rulers were Mayan spiritual guides, and they governed according to the two realities of the human being, the plan material and the spiritual plan. It was they who clarified the mysteries of everyday life, the cultivation and harvesting, disease and death. They used their influence and knowledge to create agreements. They could recognize the signs of heaven and nature when war was coming, and when it was time for peace.

Another lesson of our ancient sages is that the accumulation of wealth is an aberration.

Our world is made up of three interdependent kingdoms: the celestial vault littered with stars, the intermediate, arid world of the earth, and the darkness of the subterranean underworld. These three dimensions of existence are closely linked. In fact, these three kingdoms have life and have great sacred power.

The sky is represented as a big snake, which creates the rain in response to requests from the land and in response to the rites and sacrifices that spiritual guides make on earth.

The underworld, called Xibalba, is invisible, yet it is inhabited by animals, plants and people of various kinds.

The level of human existence, the intermediate world of earth, is a sacred site. The four cardinal points hold together the key network of communities and the entire surface of the world. Each cardinal point has a color, an element, and a significance.

We can say that the Mayan view of the world is that of a square, and the four cardinal points are related to the center which is green and blue.
