Part II The Mayan Calendar and Mathematics

Part II The Mayan calendar and mathematics:

As does modern man, the Maya have had a way of recording the passage of time. We call the days in different ways and we recognize that there are links between days and events. It is now understood that we use the fingers of the human body to have a count of twenty. What is more, we use cycles of 20 years to represent a long-count calendar:

1 day = Kin
5 days = Wayeb
20 days = Winaq
360 days (1 year) = Tun
7.200 days (20 years) = Katun
144.000 days = Baktun

It is interesting to note that the Maya have recorded in codices the fundamental events of human history, including the extinction of the dinosaurs that gave rise at the beginning of the existence of mammals, the appearance of Pitecantropus and the arrival of the genus Homo.

We can say that, according to Mayan writings, the thirteen orders of Creation were not just theoretical or abstract numbers, but a specific and concrete time-frame. This mechanism was able to compute truly cosmic cycles.

Mayan Numbering:

The Maya, unlike western men who have to memorize 10 different symbols for numbers, use only three: the point, the ray and a shell. These symbols are applied to an ordered matrix superimposed on top of each other to complete 13; with these our ancestors did amazing calculations that are embodied in their extraordinary construction of buildings and cities.

With our numeric system, we can implement the four basic mathematical operations, as does the western man with the decimal system, for helping with the construction of multiplication tables and with the use of a kind of abacus, formed by a grid or mathematical table.

The use of mathematics in the calendars is an intimate relationship of human beings and their surroundings, especially with women, because the sacred calendar of 260 days has a special link with the approximate time that the baby remains in the womb of the mother, besides having a relationship with the cycles of the sun, moon and Venus.

The sages of antiquity were fully aware that human beings are one with the cosmos and deduced that in the body there are mathematical correlations. We discovered the relationships between possessing 20 fingers and 13 joints, which when multiplied give as a result the number 260, which is the number of days of the sacred calendar. The civil, or solar calendar is 365 days. There are signs that the sacred calendar was created in Copan.
